🎙️Interview with Li Xuan, Chairman of the Taiwan Language Road Association, Part 2: What should we do when children are far removed from their mother tongue?
Are you aware of the crisis that overseas children face in using their mother tongue when they enter local schools?
Children's native language, which they used to speak and understand, sees its usage rate drop from 100% to 50%, or even lower, gradually fading and disappearing! Children are very clever; they instinctively choose the language used in their environment to survive. In contrast, their native language—whether Mandarin, Taiwanese, or other native languages—is used less frequently and in fewer contexts. Over time, children gradually lose their memory of their native language!
In an interview with Li Xuan, Chairperson of the Taiwanese Language Association, she discussed how parents need to make considerable efforts and persevere if they want their children to retain their mother tongue after they enter the school system. For her, protecting the mother tongue is not just about preserving a language, but also about protecting the roots of a culture and a sense of identity. Listen as Li Xuan recounts how she builds a fortress of mother tongue for her children.
